Differently-abled children join hands with corporates to restore city’s green cover
What can little children do when rapid urbanisation and growing infrastructure development make a city lose its green cover? They can do a lot! This is what the differently-abled children of Welfare Centre for Speech and Hearing Therapy showed when they joined hands with Mitsubishi Electric to help bring back the city’s depleting ‘green lung’.
On September 12, about 150 differently-abled children from the city-based Welfare Centre for Speech and Hearing Therapy Gurgaon, along with employees and senior officials from Mitsubishi Electric Group Companies in India, took part in a tree plantation activity that was held at the welfare centre premises. This event was a first-of-its-kind where senior members of all the three Mitsubishi Electric Group Companies in India: Mitsubishi Electric Automotive India Pvt. Ltd., Mitsubishi Elevator India Pvt. Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric India Pvt. Ltd. were present for a CSR activity showing their commitment to the cause and consolidating the CSR efforts of Mitsubishi Electric Group Companies in India. Mitsubishi Electric also sponsored an engaging creative workshop of making decorative artefacts at the welfare centre. Students of the welfare centre showcased their creativity by decorating mosaic tiles and painting earthen pots during the workshop. Artefacts made by the students will be put on display and will be available for sale at the charity fairs organised by NGO Uthaan. The amount collected will be directly donated to the Welfare Centre for Speech and Hearing Therapy Gurgaon by the NGO.
As a token of gratitude, an artefact created by the children was presented to Mr. Minoru Hagiwara, Chief Representative of Asia Pacific Region, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation by Mrs Sharanjeet Kaur, Principal, Welfare Centre for Speech and Hearing Therapy Gurgaon.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Makoto Kitai, MD, Mitsubishi Electric India said, “It is very encouraging to see children coming forward to participate in such activities. We are more than happy to support them in creating awareness and building concern for the environment.”
This year too, like each year, the programme was an extension of Mitsubishi Electric’s philanthropic activitiy which is in line with the company’s aim to be a leading green company, making lasting contributions to every society in which it operates.
Seventy saplings of local native species like Ashoka Pendula, Acalypha, TMC, Nerium Odorum, Gulmohar, Jacaranda along with some fruit bearing trees like mango and black plum were planted during the drive and fifty ornamental potted plants were donated to the Centre. Mitsubishi Electric India also undertook the responsibility of air conditioning the computer-lab of the Welfare Centre for Speech and Hearing Therapy with Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioners to give comfort to the students.
