India, 6 th February 2026: Mitsubishi Electric India, a global leader in electrical and electronic equipment, inaugurated its new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility today, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The facility was virtually inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, through a virtual plaque unveiling, in the presence of the Hon’ble Consul General of Japan, Mr. Muneo Takahashi.
The Chennai facility has been developed with a total investment of approximately ₹2,100 crore, underscoring Mitsubishi Electric India’s long-term commitment to strengthening its
manufacturing footprint in the country. This marks the company’s second manufacturing facility in India within a span of two years, following the inauguration of its Factory Automation Systems manufacturing plant in Pune in 2023, and represents an important milestone in Mitsubishi Electric’s 15-year journey in India. The facility further strengthens Mitsubishi Electric’s long-term strategy of deepening localisation, enhancing supply chain resilience, and supporting India’s transition towards advanced, sustainable manufacturing.
Spread over 210,000 sq. m., the facility has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioner, and 650,000 compressors units. In addition to creating over 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities, the facility is expected to significantly strengthen the regional supplier ecosystem by encouraging local sourcing of components, developing technical capabilities among partners, and enabling skill development aligned with global manufacturing standards.
Aligned with the Government of India’s Make in India initiative, the facility enables higher localisation of room air conditioners and compressors - components that have traditionally relied on imports. By manufacturing these products domestically, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to reduce import dependence, support the development of a self-reliant HVAC manufacturing ecosystem, and contribute to India’s broader manufacturing ambitions.
The facility also plays an important role in supporting India’s environmental and energy efficiency objectives. The locally manufactured air conditioners and compressors are
designed to comply with India’s evolving energy efficiency standards, contributing to reduced energy consumption and supporting the country’s sustainability and climate goals, particularly in the context of growing demand for cooling solutions.
At the inauguration, Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin said, “Chennai continues to serve as the manufacturing backbone of Tamil Nadu, anchored by a deep and well- established industrial ecosystem. The inauguration of Mitsubishi Electric India’s new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility reflects the state’s growing potential and our commitment to enabling businesses from India and across the world to strengthen manufacturing, expand operations, and grow sustainably in Tamil Nadu.”
Present on the occasion, Mr. Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India, said, “India is witnessing a rapid growth for energy-efficient and high-quality air- conditioning solutions. This facility will support this growing demand through local manufacturing, while enabling us to respond faster to customer needs, strengthen quality control, and ensure sustainable operations. It will position India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air conditioning business. Aligned with the progressive industrial vision of the Tamil Nadu government, this investment underscores our long-term commitment to India, Tamil Nadu, and the country’s manufacturing ambitions.”
Built on Mitsubishi Electric’s global manufacturing principles and advanced Japanese technology, the facility integrates data-driven and digitally enabled manufacturing processes to ensure high levels of quality, safety, and operational efficiency. These practices enable real-time monitoring, precision manufacturing, and consistent quality control, while supporting stable operations and continuous improvement.
The facility has also been developed with a strong focus on responsible manufacturing, incorporating measures aimed at optimising resource usage, reducing waste, and ensuring a safe and inclusive working environment. By combining global best practices with local execution, the Chennai factory reflects Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to sustainable operations and long-term value creation in India.
Backed by decades of global expertise, this facility brings Mitsubishi Electric’s Japanese technology and manufacturing excellence closer to the Indian market. It will further strengthen the state’s role as an enabler of high-value, technology-driven manufacturing, supported by robust infrastructure and strong policy framework.
